John Hobson Best Sidelock Ejector, 12 bore, 2 3/4" chambers, a new and it's first nitro proof done in London in 1998 at 70mm (2 3/4") and 850 BAR, 30" damascus barrels choked .005 Skt1 and .005 Skt1, ejectors, 6 lbs. 13 oz., 14 3/8"" LOP to checkered butt with heel and toe plates, 1 1/2" DAC, 2 1/8" DAH, 3/8" cast off, double triggers, straight grip, splinter fore end, nicely figured wood, vacant gold oval, barrels have been rebrowned. The barrels are marked "Boss & Co. 73 St. James Street, London". Very fine English scroll that closely matches the transitional Boss pattern used in the first few years of the 1890's after Robertson took over and is likely the work of Sumner. The previous owner of this gun, whom is a prominent gun writer, says that Hobson was an actioner with Boss and was the only person authorized to use Boss barrels on his guns. It is believed the gun was made approx. 1891 which would date to the Boss company name and address on the barrels and the serial number on the barrels. I have confirmed that the barrels were made separately at Boss and not originally part of a Boss gun. Hobson is listed in the British Gunmakers at 63 Regent St. Leamington, Warks, c. 1886-1922. Cased in an A&F leather trunk case with a Boss trade label. Very high quality gun.
