Jim Payne Model 96, 6 1/2 ft., 2/1, 2 1/4 oz., 4 wt, nickel silver sliding band over cedar spacer, brown wraps tipped in gold/white, Jim Payne sold his ownership in 1947 but continued on making Payne rods until his death in 1968. In the early 1960's Gladding bought the Payne company but was unable to keep the company going too long after Jim's death. These two model 96 rods were the last two rods sold under the Gladding ownership and thus the last two Payne rods from the company as we knew it. The one owner of these rods was friends with a Gladding manager and was given the opportunity to purchase these new before they closed the doors. Better yet, he didn't fish and was advised to just put them away which he did all these years. These are still in brand new condition just as they left the shop. These are being sold individually for $4,750 each. The only difference in the two rods is a slight color difference in the agate stripper; your choice.
