Gillum, H.S., Trout, 8', #5, 4 1/8 oz., 3/2, this rod looks to be the very scarce "first model" with the typical for the model but rarely seen cork reel seat, Halstead's reel seat hardware of slide band and end cap as well as Halstead's pinned ferrules, hook keeper, blued ferrules and tip tops, typical transluscent amber/gold/beige wraps with no tipping but with black bands of tipping at the male ferrules and hook keeper, hand lettered on the butt section " H. S. Gillum, Custom Built". This is a one owner rod and is fresh from the estate of the original owner, he lived in a nearby town to Pinky and knew him well. All sections are the correct length, the ferrule fit is still excellent, and all sections are straight, the cork is certainly soiled with some ridging and looks like it has never been cleaned, there is blue wear on the ferrules as one would expect as well as chips in the varnish, comes with the original bag and proper tube though the tube has no label, the wraps look to be all original, there are no serial numbers on the rod. Was the rod built without serial numbers or were they lost in a long ago refinish? We honestly don't know the answer to that one, the varnish looks to be original but we can't explain the lack of serial numbers. We know this rod hasn't been fished in decades. All in all, a nice early example of Pinky's work.
