Leonard 1877 Patent Salmon Reel, circa 1890-1900, this is the famed Leonard Salmon reel made on the Philbrook & Payne patent number 191813, marked on the front plate "H.L. Leonard, Pat No 191813", this is an early reel made by Philbrook & Payne for Leonard and not Julius vom Hofe as the post-1900 reels were, has the nickel silver spool with bronze spindle, solid foot without the jvh hole, and the unmistakable Philbrook & Payne handle design. This reel also features the sliding drag adjustment bar on the backplate that is also marked with the drag patent date of Jul 22, 1890 in the nickel silver, 18 oz., 4 1/4" diameter (across the pillars) with an inside spool width of 1 5/8", full length 3 1/2" foot, nickel-silver reel with black hard rubber sideplates, reel functions properly with no issues, drag adjustment works well, screws are all good, reel would rate about very good to excellent with one dent in the front sideplate, otherwise no other chips or cracks in the rubber, there is a very slight twist in the foot from one end to the other. Comes with a vintage and probably original leather case marked "Mills" on the bottom. These reels are relative bargains when you can find them as the same reel with the marbelized color sideplates instead of black are now bringing upwards of $25,000. An American classic.
